Banking

A full suite of non-cash services in euro have been available from 1 January 1999;
Exchange of euro for legacy currency until 28 February 2002 was subject to individual bank arrangements. Exchange at central bank branches indefinitely.

Business Preparations

The percentage of SMEs who had changed over to euro on 1 January 2002 for:
accounting systems
89 per cent
prices
90 per cent
invoicing
93 per cent
computer systems and IT
81 per cent

Overall SMEs considered that the changeover to the euro:
had been easier or much easier than they planned
32 per cent
proceeded as they planned
61 per cent
had been more difficult than expected
5 per cent

10 per cent of SME's had encountered practical difficulties when changing over to the euro.

When converting prices from national currency to the euro the percentage of SMEs who had:
converted prices some upwards and some downwards
28 per cent
converted prices on a neutral basis
58 per cent
converted prices upwards
8 per cent
converted prices downwards
4 per cent

Retail

Many German retailers supported a voluntary agreement to fix prices over the cash changeover period starting from July 2001.

Accounting

All accounting operations were/had to be euro denominated from 1 January 2002. Many large corporates have already converted accounting systems except where accounting is still required to be made in national currency - such as benefit payments.

General Public

Levels of euro awareness (Barometer Survey May 2002).

83 per cent felt that the introduction of the euro went well or fairly well.
89 per cent felt that the changeover to the euro went without any difficulties or with some temporary difficulties for them personally and 87 per cent for everyone.
59 per cent said that they found it easy to remember prices in euro, 56 per cent compare prices in euro and 79 per cent to understand bills in euro.
64 per cent thought that dual pricing of goods was essential or fairly useful.
For dual pricing in shops:
  - 41 per cent thought it was no longer useful
  - 35 per cent for three to six months
  - 19 per cent for more than six months
9 per cent thought that prices when converted to euro had either not been rounded or had been rounded down.
   
When asked which organisations had helped the most.
41 per cent thought the media
14 per cent thought shops and other retailers
46 per cent thought the banks
8 per cent thought consumer or other representative groups
31 per cent thought family and friends


Information Activities

The federal government is continuing its information campaign for SME's. In October 2001, the federal Ministry of Economics and Technology organized a meeting with the Turkish Press in order to inform the Turkish business community in Germany. Public acceptance of the euro is rising steadily. A Euro tent tour through 100 cities attracted many visitors.
